It is high time to use technical achievements of the XX century. Development of space industry can improve living conditions in the hard climate of the High North – Norway, Canada, Russia, USA, as well as the Antarctic. The Polar Day is followed by the Polar Night, causing discomfort and excessive energy consumption. We proposes to exploit the technology of solar mirrors located on the orbit in order to prolong the duration of daylight and to create a more comfortable life. Due to the early ideas of the scientists Tsiolkovsky and Zander we can do it today, by employing the solar sails to illuminate the Northern towns. We do not suggest hunting the reindeer with a laser from the Earth's orbit. We offer help to hunters, fishermen, farmers and mine-workers in preserving their traditions under the light of solar sails. Enter the video installation, lie down on the reindeer pelts and enjoy the exposed picture of the global change-to-come.
Sergey Shutov
The artist Sergey Shutov has been preoccupied with myths about space, progress and new technologies for a long time. He is one of the first Russian artists who dived into the cutting-edge technologies. With the message that technology is just a tool. What matters is how it is used.
As a person of his generation, in his youth he was dreaming about space travel, worshipped Gagarin, and devoured books of science fiction. He believed that the paradise on Earth is possible and it is the progress that makes it achievable. He may have disillusioned in these fantasies, but the space motifs have remained part and parcel of his art.
Shutov's preoccupation with cosmos and futurism is far from building up more and more extraterrestrial spaces. He appeals to the space mysticism of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky of the early 1900s and pioneer of rocketry and space science Friedrich Zander. Shutov raises basic questions of how the space industry can contribute to the everyday future of mankind. The artist is deeply mesmerized by the current experiments with the solar sails (the forthcoming launch of the newest generation LightSail is planned by the Planetary Society in 2010) and by the possibilities they offer.
Пришло время использовать технические достижения прошлого века! Развитие космонавтики сегодня позволяет улучшить жизнь людей в суровых условиях северной полярной ночи в странах заполярного и субполярного региона – Норвегии, Канаде, России, США, а также в Антарктике. Освоение человеком северных земель, несущее экономические, ресурсные и эстетические преимущества, поставило их новых обитателей в новые условия чередования полярного дня и полярной ночи, оборачивающиеся не только внутренним дискомфортом, но и перерасходом энергетических ресурсов. Мы предлагаем использовать технологию космических зеркал, установленных на устойчивой околоземной орбите, для увеличения продолжительности светового дня и создания более комфортных условий жизни. Благодаря идеям Циолковского и Цандера сегодня мы можем это сделать, и Киркенес увидит новый свет и преображенную землю. Парящие в космосе зеркальные паруса, освещающие конкретное место на планете, называются по именам соответствующих городов. Так мы связываем сверхсовременные космические технологии с традиционными формами жизни на земле. Мы не предлагаем охотиться на оленя с помощью лазера с космической орбиты, а предлагаем помочь охотникам, рыболовам, фермерам и шахтерам сохранить традиции под светом солнечных парусов. В видеоинсталляции «Космический свет» зрители, возлежащие на шкурах северных оленей, смогут наблюдать развернутую картину этого глобального изменения жизни на Земле.
